Going out West

This morning I was the supply priest at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Graham, Texas. Melisa, Maddy and I had a great time. We stopped by and looked at some cows on the way back. I also took a picture of this old and interesting looking closed-down hotel in Mineral Wells.

As Pcasso pointed out, it is the Baker Hotel. Just for fun, here is a link to "Ghosts of the Baker Hotel." Also, for some amazing photographs of the hotel interior and exterior, visit Noel Kerns' Baker set on Flickr.

That was the Baker Hotel and for those of us old enough to remember, it was a pretty swanky place in it's day. Sorry that it has gone by the wayside :-(

My family used to stay at the Baker Hotel when I was young. Even then I knew it was a special place.

I can imagine what the penthouse was like. And it looked like there used to be some nice gardens next to the hotel; a little bridge goes from one to the other.

I had a great Aunt Bertha that lived there for 10 years until she died at the age of 96. She lived on one of the hills nearby and as a child I would go visit there. No running water-had to hand pump it. Kerosene lamps -Two seater outhouse(which I hated)and chicken coop next to it. It was a one room shandy. We slept on the floors. Never quite understood how she afforded the Baker, but she said she wanted to live and die in a place with running water and indoor toilett. She loved it there.
